If you had a bike growing up, you probably remember riding with your
siblings and/or friends, cycling with family or maybe even using it as
your main transportation.
For a few years, my bicycle
was the way I got to and from school. I didn't think of it as a work
out then. Now, it's time to re-live my childhood fun. A friend of mine
gave me a bike pump for my birthday so I could get back into cycling.
It
doesn't have to be a major race and it doesn't have to be fast. No one
is expecting you to look like the super cyclists you see on the road in
the morning. Pick up your bike, pump up your tires and strap on your
helmet.
According to Women's Health, biking can decrease fatigue and boost energy.
It also releases a chemical in your brain called dopamine (this is a
good thing!). If you're worried about heart health, people who took
time to bike 30 min a day for 3x a week (at a med-high pace) improved
their aerobic fitness.
If
you find that biking can be a literal pain in the ass, consider
investing in a gel seat cushion for your bike seat, or check out some
fancy biking shorts that comes with posterior padding.
The point isn't to be a hero. It's about taking just one more step to get fit.
